A mobility scooter is a major investment, so it’s important to make sure it continues improving your quality of life for many years. A little bit of daily maintenance—along with a yearly servicing—goes a long way in keeping your scooter reliable and safe.
The good news is that basic maintenance is simple and can usually be done right at home. Here’s a complete guide on how to service and maintain your mobility scooter.
Read the manual
Start by getting familiar with your scooter using the manufacturer’s manual. The more you know about its parts and functions, the better you’ll be at spotting issues. Consider taking photos (including close-ups) of a new, properly functioning scooter for reference later.
Ask your dealer about battery care
Your dealer can recommend the best maintenance schedule and share tips to maximize battery life and performance.
Protect your scooter from the elements
Whenever possible, avoid rain or extreme temperatures. If you do use your scooter in poor weather, protect its electrical components and seating. Waterproof covers, tire guards, and protective shells are available from Mobility and other suppliers.
Clean your mobility scooter
Wipe away dust, dirt, or mud before they build up. Dirt in moving parts can cause damage, and moisture can lead to rust or corrosion. Don’t forget the underside and battery pack, which are often overlooked. Store your scooter in a clean, dry place such as a garage, hallway, or shed when not in use.
Every Week
Quick surface clean – Wipe down your scooter weekly with a soft damp cloth. Use recommended cleaning products where appropriate.
Check tire pressure – Inspect tires for punctures, cracks, or uneven wear. Refer to your manual for the proper PSI and ensure tires spin smoothly without wobbling. Replace damaged or flat tires immediately to avoid valve damage and reduced battery life.
Non-air tires – If your scooter has solid tires, service is only needed when treads wear out or bearings loosen. Always consult your manual before doing maintenance yourself.
Every Month
Check your battery
Keep the battery area clean and free from corrosion. Charge fully for 8–10 hours (or per manual instructions) and recharge after every use. Avoid charging if the battery still has 80% or more power left. Remember, headlights, rider weight, slopes, and accessories can all affect battery life.
Examine Tire Treads
Make sure tread depth is at least 1/32”. Replace tires if they show signs of excessive wear or are not holding air properly.
Inspect Wheel Bearings & Components
Check wheel bearings, nuts, bolts, fuses, and other visible parts. If you notice any changes or issues, consult a technician.
Every Year
Schedule a full inspection
Have a trained scooter technician carry out a complete annual check-up. They can spot minor issues before they turn into costly repairs. If you have questions about maintenance, you can always contact Mobility for guidance.
Mobility Scooter Insurance
While not legally required, insurance is highly recommended for added peace of mind. A policy can cover:
Major repair costs
Theft protection
Third-party liability (e.g., collisions with pedestrians)
Accidental damage
Roadside breakdown assistance
Before purchasing a new plan, check whether your household insurance already covers your mobility scooter.
